English Premier League spending was hurtling toward a staggering $3 billion in a record outlay during European soccer’s summer transfer window on Friday.Manchester City and — of course — Chelsea were among those making moves on a typically frantic deadline day.Chelsea was leading the unprecedented splurge, with the arrival of 21-year-old winger Cole Palmer from City for 40 million pounds ($50.7 million) taking the west London club’s spending in this window to around $500 million. In the three transfer windows under its new American ownership fronted by Todd Boehly, Chelsea has spent about $1.15 billion on players mostly signed up on long contracts in an innovative way to spread “amortization” costs of transfer fees.By comparison, the $260 million outlay by City, the English and European champion, looks modest. The fourth and final arrival in the window came on deadline day and was Portugal international Matheus Nunes from Wolverhampton, a ball-carrier costing $67 million ...Entran en vigencia nuevos requisitos para recibir cupones de alimentos SNAP: estos son los cambios

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — When Larry Farmer walked into UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion for the first time, his gaze quickly turned toward the rafters. It was impossible to miss all those championship banners.“I immediately knew that was the standard,” Farmer recalled Friday. “It was right there in plain sight. Second or third wasn’t really the goal.”As Georgia begins its quest for an unprecedented three-peat in college football, those who have been there before can provide some helpful perspective on what it takes to keep winning titles year after year after year.Farmer is one of those, claiming championships during all three of his varsity seasons at UCLA. So is Denis Potvin, who played for the last NHL team to capture more than two rings in a row.Potvin, a Hockey Hall of Famer, can still remember the fear that those mighty New York Islanders teams of the early 1980s brought out in their opponents.“When you play so close — face to face, nose to nose — against the opponent, I’m no...Democrat set to become first state legislator who identifies as gay in Mississippi after primary win

(CNN) — Fabian Nelson will win the Democratic primary to represent Mississippi’s House District 66, CNN projects, and is set to become the state’s first legislator who identifies as gay.According to unofficial election night results from Hinds County, Mississippi, Nelson had won about 69% of the vote to Roshunda Harris-Allen’s 31%. No candidate received a majority vote in the first round on August 8, resulting in the runoff election on Tuesday.“We did it! Thank you District 66!” Nelson said in a Facebook post Wednesday. There was no Republican primary in Mississippi’s 66th District, so Nelson will be the only candidate on the general election ballot in the heavily Democratic district. However, voters will have a write-in option. In a Facebook Live with supporters earlier Wednesday, Nelson said he’s not waiting until January to start working and will start next week because he has to “understand what my community needs.”Annise Parker, president and CEO of LGBTQ+ Victory ...‘It blows my mind’: Diving duo’s hunts for invasive lionfish making a splash on social media

Families in Dracut continued to wait for answers Friday after public school officials told them this year’s high school football season may have to be canceled due to a shortage of players. As of Thursday, the Dracut High School football team had just 17 players physically cleared to play. “To field a varsity team safely, we must ensure that students are appropriate for the vigorous and demanding level of competition required for varsity play, have rest and relief during play, and sufficient numbers of back-up players should injuries sideline players,” school officials said in a statement this week about the situation. “To do otherwise places students at greater risk.”While school officials consider their options, families and players have expressed frustration, holding a rally Thursday evening in hopes of saving this year’s football season.
