An East Bay city receives its cinematic closeup this weekend — and it’s a worthy one.In “Fremont,” a droll and perceptive indie dramedy directed and co-written with wit by Babak Jalali, insomniac Afghan immigrant Donya (first-time actor Anaita Wali Zada) seeks to carve out a more vibrant existence in the titular East Bay city while working at a San Francisco fortune cookie factory. But the 22-year-old’s lack of sleep proves to be a big impediment, one that’s fueled by her feelings of being a stranger in a strange land as well as by dealing with her own past in her homeland.Sleep deprivation leads the deadpan-direct Donya to try to get sleeping pills from a Jack London-obsessed psychiatrist (a hilarious Gregg Turkington), who doesn’t exactly know how to interpret what she’s feeling but does hit on something incisive about the immigrant experience via London’s classic, “White Fang.”Jalali’s quirky Jim Jarmusch-like storytelling is a delight but requires that you...Car crashes into power pole, knocking out power in part of Sausalito

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani left the mound in the middle of an at-bat during the second inning Wednesday because of arm fatigue, the Los Angeles Angels said.Ohtani had a 2-2 count on Reds third baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand when the Angels’ training staff came out to check on him following a 94 mph fastball. Ohtani headed off the mound after a brief discussion, having thrown just 26 pitches in the first game of a doubleheader. The two-way superstar and AL MVP front-runner skipped his previous turn in the rotation last week to rest his arm late in a long summer. Ohtani’s velocity was down across the board Wednesday while he faced the Reds’ first six batters, although he sometimes ramps up his pitching speeds gradually in the opening innings.Ohtani hit his major league-leading 44th homer in the first inning, a two-run shot against Cincinnati. He also left the game as the Angels’ designated hitter, with rookie Nolan Schanuel replacing him.Ohtani h...Banco BBVA: Q2 Earnings Snapshot

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Temperatures have soared in the central U.S., leading to deaths in some states as more dangerous heat is expected, a national weather service official said. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Computer chip maker Nvidia has rocketed into the constellation of Big Tech’s brightest stars while riding the artificial intelligence craze that’s fueling red-hot demand for its technology. The latest evidence of Nvidia’s ascendance emerged with Wednesday’s release of the company’s quarterly earnings report. The results covering the May-July period exceeded Nvidia’s projections for astronomical sales growth propelled by the company’s specialized chips — key components that help power different forms of artificial intelligence such as Open AI’s popular ChatGPT and Google’s Bard chatbots.Nvidia’s revenue for its fiscal second quarter doubled from the same time last year to $13.51 billion, culminating in a profit of $6.2 billion, or $2.48 per share, more than nine times more than the company made a year ago.
