Twins’ first order of offseason business is getting healthy

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:50:17 GMT

While the Twins were still competing in the playoffs, Byron Buxton’s singular focus was getting his body back to the point where he could go out there and compete alongside his teammates. He did, returning after two and a half months on the injured list on Wednesday. The Twins activated Buxton before Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Houston Astros as an injury replacement for Alex Kirilloff, and he took one pinch-hit at-bat in Wednesday’s Game 4 elimination loss. Now that the Twins have been bounced from the postseason, the focus will shift to getting their players healthy — particularly Buxton, Kirilloff and Carlos Correa, all of whom spent much of the 2023 season playing through pain. For Buxton, a knee issue that first presented itself last year kept him from playing the field for the entirety of the season, limiting him to DHing. By the end of the season, the Twins had been talking about him returning to center field, but one game out there on a rehab...

No, Hunter Tyson is not Larry Bird. But Michael Malone isn’t Tyson’s first coach to invoke the Hall of Famer

Clemson coach Brad Brownell admired how coachable the teenager was in a peripheral role at the time.So during a practice early in Tyson’s career, after he had chucked some ill-advised shots, Brownell teased him in front of the team.“Hey man, you’re not Larry Bird,” Brownell remembers saying. “Pass the ball.”Tyson was sufficiently ribbed by his teammates after practice. But it wasn’t until years later that he earned back the comparison in earnest. The marquee performance of Tyson’s five-year college career — the one that helped catapult him toward first-team All-ACC honors and the second round of the NBA draft — was a 31-point, 15-rebound display against North Carolina State. Brownell was in awe during a second-half timeout, enough to announce to the huddle: “Fellas, maybe he is Larry Bird tonight.”So Bro...
