PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix city officials said Tuesday they have been slowly and steadily clearing hundreds of people from a downtown encampment of homeless people called “The Zone,” and they asked a judge for more time to clear out the remaining hundreds still living there.About a year ago, as many as 1,000 people lived in the tent city that exploded in size during the COVID-19 pandemic. City officials say up to 300 people have since left the site under efforts launched in late 2022 to get them into shelters, or into temporary or permanent housing. Area shelters are typically full. Representing Phoenix, attorney Justin Pierce told Judge Scott Blaney that much progress has been made since March, when the court ordered Phoenix to lessen the public nuisance the encampment created. Deputy City Manager Gina Montes testified that Phoenix has now identified a property for a structured camping site with bathrooms and showers for those without housing, which it hopes to open by summer’s e...

AUSTIN (Nexstar) -- Lawmakers unanimously approved a package of three bills to provide record property tax relief through the House Ways and Means Committee Tuesday, clearing the way for much of the legislation to receive approval by the full House and reach the Governor's desk.Top leaders anticipate the legislature will have finally passed all of their bills by Thursday afternoon. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told Nexstar he expects the measures will receive strong public approval and homeowners will see tax savings as soon as this year. "It's a long road. We went into the second overtime period. But the truth is no one really has ever done an $18 billion package in the history of the world that I know of for property taxes," Patrick said. "We got to where we needed to get and when the voters vote this November, the constitutional amendment will take effect this year. They will get the savings this year of $1,250 to $1,450."Those numbers are based on an avera...

Just a month before their contents would have been lost forever, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota employees stumbled upon a bit of history: two forgotten time capsules hidden in the company’s Eagan headquarters. The discovery began as facility managers were going through archives at the 442,000-square-foot building. They spotted something curious.“We discovered architectural drawings — blueprints,” said Mira LaNasa, public relations specialist at the health insurer. “They are huge booklets that take up an entire picnic table with detailed drawings of where everything is.”By chance, a manager spotted an unusual marking on one of the thousands of pages. “It indicated time capsules located at the front of the building,” LaNasa said.No one currently at the company remembered hearing about time capsules. After 50 years at the Eagan location, the company was preparing to move out of the building, forever.A manager snapped a photo of th...

Evacuated homes continue sinking after massive landslide in Rolling Hills Estates

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:53:07 GMT

As homes continue collapsing into a canyon in Rolling Hills Estates, city officials are expected to declare a state of emergency Tuesday night. The landslide was first reported late Saturday night when destructive ground shifting forced the evacuation of dozens of homes along Peartree Lane on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. At least twelve homes were red-tagged as unsafe and residents were given just 20 minutes to evacuate. By Sunday, another 10 homes were actively moving with the shifting ground and 16 additional homes were being monitored. The ground had shifted over 20 feet in a 24-hour period with no signs of stopping. The destructive landslide left a jumble of collapsed roofs, shattered walls, tilted chimneys and decks dangling over an adjacent canyon.Officials now say it’s only a matter of time before some of the homes completely tumble down the steep canyon. The biggest unanswered question remains — what exactly is causing the massive rift?L.A. Firefighters brace for wildfires as heat wave tightens grip on Southland

As the heat wave blanketing Southern California tightens its grip, bringing triple-digit temps, many families are hitting the water to stay cool while firefighters brace for the increased risk of wildfire across the region.  At the Fontana Park Aquatic Center, families were having a blast beating the heat in the splash pad. Kyoki Nance, 10, told KTLA it was her dad’s birthday, and they came out to have some fun.  “I’m having an amazing time,” Hakeem Nance, Kyoki’s dad, said. “I’m here with the family, no better feeling.”  Fontana Aquatic Center Coordinator Jessica Barragan said the facility offers all kinds of activities for people.  “We offer recreational swim, we offer swim lessons, junior guard camp and as of right now, we are open seven days a week,” she explained.  Outside the aquatic center, however, places like Patricia Murray Park were a ghost town during the hottest part of the day. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for much of the Inla...

Ready to complete the 'Barbenheimer' circuit? Summer's most-anticipated films set to release on same day

Blockbuster releases are typically spread out strategically throughout the summer to encourage a near-constant stream of ticket revenue and public interest. But in a rare turn of events, the two most anticipated films of the year are set to release on the same day, and they couldn't be any more different from each other.Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," will both premiere on the big screen on July 21, begging the question: which film should you see on opening day?For thousands of moviegoers who purchased their tickets through theater chain AMC, that's apparently not a problem. AMC said in a statement to Variety that more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members — the theater chain's rewards program — have double-booked, buying tickets for both films on the same day.The theater experience likely couldn't be any more different between the two films."Oppenheimer" is a gritty R-rated historical biopic that tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, who spearheaded ...
